United, Blue Boys open gap
By: Helge SchutzWINDHOEK United and Blue Boys remain the pace setters in the Southern Stream First Division, having opened up a sizable gap on the rest of the field, following last weekend’s Round 17 matches.
Windhoek United beat Unam 1-0 on May 11 after thomas Nakale converted a first half penalty, but they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bee Bob Brothers in Mariental the following day. They remain at the top of the log on 36 points from 17 matches - one point ahead of Blue Boys, who also collected four points over the weekend.
On May 11 they drew 1-1 against Spoilers and then beat Swakopmund 2-1 in a coastal derby the following day.
Swakopmund had taken an early lead through Donavan Hanaseb, but a 79th minute penalty by Gabriel Shemuvalula and a goal six minutes later by Kenny Malgas gave Blue Boys the victory.
The chasing pack however dropped further behind as former log leaders Young Beauties and Try Again both dropped points.
Young Beauties thrashed Desert Rollers on May 11, with Mathias Uyepa scoring a hattrick, but then lost 2-1 to Monitronic College the next day. They dropped to fourth position on 30 points, just behind Try Again on goal difference. Try Again were held to a goalless draw by Monitronic College on May 11 and then thrashed Desert Rollers 5-1 the next day.
Sixth-placed Bee Bob Brothers had a good weekend, holding log leaders Windhoek United to a 1-1 draw on May 12 and thrashing Hotspurs 5-1 the previous day, with Ricorius Bock scoring a hat-trick.
Hotspurs remain at the bottom of the log, two points behind Desert Rollers.
In matches this coming weekend, Windhoek United host Spoilers and Swakopmund, who are both close to the relegation zone, while Blue Boys travel to Windhoek to take on Monitronic College, and Gobabis to take on Desert Rollers.
