Spotlight on Kenya at the Cannes Film Festival
The Cannes International Film Festival, founded in 1946, is one of the most prestigious and publicised film festivals in the world, which welcomes the world’s most renowned professionals in the cinematographic industry.
This year, the Cannes Film Market has its spotlight on Kenya, which gives a great opportunity for the Kenyan industry to expose its work, and connect its own network to the rest of the world. This focus will be an occasion for promoting and encouraging national production, professional training, commercial distribution, filmmakers’ mobility, and student exchanges. It will also allow the Kenyan Film Commission (KFC) to benefit from the experience of the international cinematographic industry on public cinema policies.
For the first time this year, from the 15 to the 26 May, Kenya is going to have its own pavilion, where Kenyan producers, filmmakers and professionals of the industry will be welcomed to showcase their work and run their professional meetings. This effort was taken in order to give the appropriate signal to France, who chose to partner with Kenya by highlighting its creative dynamism within the artistic and economic field.
Several Kenyan producers have been invited to France in order to showcase their work and the cinematographic industry of Kenya. A Producer’s Network in favour of Kenya, organised by the Cannes Film Market is going to take place all along the week of the festival. These daily meetings will allow the producers to showcase their work to about 30 French and international producers interested in African projects.
This will enable young and experienced professionals in broadening their scope on the exchange of information and expertise on production, and it will maximise chances for the filmmakers to get international financial support and find co-producers.
