Keetmans Regional Courts grants confiscation order

THE Keetmanshoop Regional Magistrate Piet Bekker last week granted a confiscation order against Angolan citizen Helder Marques Carvalheira (51).

Bekker issued the confiscation order in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA) in respect of property belonging to Carvalheira.
In his ruling, Bekker said the defendant benefited from the criminal activities and confiscated in favour of the State cash of N$37 000 and an Izuzu Frontier 280 DT 2x4 vehicle valued N$55 100.
The confiscation order followed an arrest of Carvalheira in 2012 after Police conducted a search of his flat at Luderitz and found unpolished diamonds value at N$ 114 821.
Convicted on a charge of possession of unpolished diamonds, Carvalheira was fined N$30 000 or two years imprisonment in the Keetmanshoop Regional Court.
In addition, Carvalheira was  sentenced to a four-year suspended jail term.
