Rain on its way

FOLLOWING an intense heat wave over most parts of the country for the past few weeks, Namibians can finally expect rainfall from Sunday, according to the weather bureau.

Weather forecaster Simon Dirkse yesterday said temperatures are expected to drop from Sunday as rains start falling over the Caprivi.
“Light falls will start in the Caprivi and Kavango on Sunday and the rest of the country can expect rain from Monday, February 4. The amount of rainfall will differ from place to place, but there will be places that will get significant falls of rain,” he said.
Temperatures will continue to be in the upper 30s in most parts of the country from today until Sunday, when they are expected to drop to the lower 30s.
Dirkse said temperatures will continue to drop from Monday to Tuesday, when they are expected to be below 30 degree Celsius.
According to Dirkse, the heat wave Namibia has been experiencing is due to an anti-cyclonic system, which is a region of high atmospheric pressure also known as high-pressure system.
“Under high pressure, the air is not rising and instead was coming down which was causing the heat,” said Dirkse.
