Double murder suspect in courtBy: OSWALD SHIVUTE
RUDOLF (Taati) Martin (31) from Oshitowa village, about 25 kilometres southwest of Oshakati, in the Oshana Region, who is accused of the murders of Frieda Shikongo (22) and Basilia Shikesho on July 23, appeared in the Oshakati Magistrate's Court on Friday.
Martin was arrested on Tuesday last week at his family home at Oshitowa village after Shikongo was found dead in his shack at Kandjengedi on the night of July 23.
Martin tried to commit suicide by taking tablets and drinking spirits and was taken to the Oshakati State Hospital after his arrest.
According to Oshana Police Commissioner, Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa, Martin confessed that he had killed both women.
When he appeared in court on Friday, he was not asked to plead and the case was postponed to September 13.
He was not granted bail and remains in custody.
Martin told the court that he will conduct his own defence.
“The offence you are accused of is a serious one, since there are two people involved, and you say you do not need a legal representative?” the magistrate asked and Martin said: “Yes, I will represent myself”.
One of the two murder victims, Frieda Shikongo, was buried on Saturday at her home village of Oshuudhi.
