CUCSA Games in full swing

THE 16th edition of the Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Games are underway in Windhoek. Here is a round-up of results in the various codes so far:

FOOTBALL
The Namibia men’s football team boasting the likes of Ronald Ketjijere, Mervin Katire, Pat Uanivi, Robert Nganjone and Panduleni Nekundi won Group A with maximum points after beating Zimbabwe 3-1 on Sunday and Malawi by the same score-line on Monday. In Group B Lesotho beat Zambia 2-0 and drew 0-0 against Botswana to all but top their group, while Malawi finished second behind Namibia after their 2-0 win over Zimbabwe. Botswana’s 2-0 win over Zambia   guaranteed them a semi-final berth.
Yesterday, Namibia were pitted against Botswana and Lesotho up against Malawi in the semifinals.
The women’s football features only four teams,.
On Monday, Namibia beat Botswana 2-0, and then hammered Zambia 7-1. Yesterday the hosts defeated Zimbabwe 8-0.
Botswana also beat Zambia 9-0 yesterday and on Monday won 6-0 against Zimbabwe, who in turn  beat Zambia 4-2.
Namibia were set to play Zimbabwe in the semifinals and Botswana will take on Zambia.
Today will be a rest day for football while the third-place playoffs will start at 09h00 tomorrow with women’s football.
The finals are set for 13h00 (women’s football) and 15h00 (men’s football).

NETBALL
The netball section also has only four teams in contention - namely Namibia, Botswana, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
On Monday, Namibia beat Zimbabwe 88-19 and Botswana downed Malawi 47-21. Yesterday Zimbabwe beat Malawi 40-18 and Namibia beat Botswana 49-17. Two more games were due to be played later yesterday as Namibia face Malawi and Botswana took on Zimbabwe.
Action will resume tomorrow morning with a fourth- and third-place playoff match as well as the final match.
The playoffs will be determined by the ranking of the teams based on points accumulated from Monday to Wednesday. The team ranked fourth will play the one ranked third and first and second to face off in the final.

VOLLEYBALL
Men’s section: Namibia 3-1 Zambia, Botswana 3-1 Zimbabwe, Lesotho 2-3 Botswana, Lesotho 3-1 Zimbabwe and Botswana 3-1 Zambia.
Ladies section: Botswana 3-1 Zimbabwe, Namibia 0-3 Angola (as at 13h00 yesterday).

BASKETBALL
In the men section, on Monday, Namibia lost 77-68 to Angola, Zambia beat Malawi 114-52 and Namibia bounced back to beat Zimbabwe 92-69.
Yesterday, Angola maintained their dominance with a 93-43 win over Malawi, while Zambia beat Zimbabwe 98-79.
The women’s section has only three countries participating. On Monday Zambia beat Zimbabwe 57-49 and Namibia were due to play Zambia later yesterday.

CHESS
Female section: (played on Monday) Namibia 1 ½ - 2  ½ Zambia, Botswana 4-0 Zimbabwe.
Men section: Angola 1-3 Zimbabwe, Botswana 2 ½ - 1 ½ Zambia, Malawi 3 ½  - ½ Namibia.
Round two was scheduled fore yesterday afternoon.

ATHLETICS
The CUCSA Zone IV Track and Field event will take place today from 09h00 to 12h00 and then 15h00 to 18h00 at the Windhoek Independence Stadium.
