COTA youth choir brings home the gold
By: Staff reporterA recent trip to Cincinnati USA has ended on a high note when the College of the Arts (COTA) youth choir received two prestigious gold awards at the 7th World Choir Games.
The dynamic young choir came third overall in their Folklore Category, receiving a Gold and received another Gold for their outstanding performance in the Mixed Youth Choir Category. Audiences and judges were of the opinion that COTA excelled in both the categories.
The choir’s repertoire includes Western music, both light and classical, contemporary choral music and traditional African and Namibian music.
This victory was just one of the numerous successes for the COTA youth choir. In 2010, they became the first choir from Namibia to represent the country at the Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuur Vereniging (ATKV) Animato Choir Competition finals in Pretoria against choirs from all over South Africa and emerged as the ultimate winners of the competition. In 2011, they took part in the same competition (ATKV Animato Choir Competition) coming second overall and earlier this year on June 9, the choir received gold at the Animato regionals.
With credentials such as these, it is clear that the COTA youth choir will continue to stand heads and shoulders over their peers and continue to outshine them time and again. The choir ended their representation of Namibia at the World Choir Games with a Friendship concert where they received standing ovations after each song they performed!
