Fish River Marathon gets backingBy: LUQMAN CLOETE
NEDBANK Namibia is partnering with Wimpy and Engen to again sponsor the Fish River Marathon, to be held on October 6 for the 26th year at Keetmanshoop. Nedbank on Monday handed over a sponsorship of N$40 000 to the event organisers, Naute Sport Forum.
Naute Sport Forum chairperson Dr Johnny Jacobs described the Fish River Marathon as a “true national” sport event.
According to Jacobs, nine Comrades Marathon runners have participated in the event over the years and he expects 300 runners to feature in this year’s event.
“We wish to give you the assurance that our long-time association with Fish River Marathon is one of that we are exceptionally proud of,” said Nedbank communications manager Gernot De Klerk.
De Klerk said the bank, as part of its ‘Deep Green Aspirations’, wants to remain highly involved in local communities and the environment.
Local sport officer Gabriel Freyer, who doubles as local councillor, thanked Naute Sport Forum for having taking the lead in “reinventing interest” in the Fish River Marathon.
