NMDC backs RDP Okahandja regional election candidate

By: STAFF REPORTER

ANOTHER political party has thrown its weight behind the collective candidate of the opposition for the Okahandja regional by-election later this month.

The Namibia Movement for Democratic Change (NMDC) yesterday declared its support for Christofine Paulus, the candidate of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP).
Paulus is now supported by seven parties altogether. The other opposition parties rallying behind Paulus are Nudo, UDF, RP, APP, and CoD.
“To my belief it is another political suicide to engage NMDC in another by-election which is run and managed by a useless Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), so my party fully supports RDP candidate Christofine Paulus,” said NMDC president Frans Goagoseb in a statement yesterday.
“NMDC under my presidency fully throws its weight behind my political colleagues in support of Ms Paulus, since we are together engaged in a court case against the ECN with regard to the outcome of the November 2009 elections,” Goagoseb said.
Before joining RDP, Paulus was a Swapo member and also the former Mayor of Okahandja.
The DTA said it was boycotting the Okahandja by-election on February 24 because it felt the court case against the ECN about the November election results should be concluded before any election took place.
The Monitor Action Group (MAG) has called on its members to elect “the best candidate”, while Swanu is sending its own candidate, Ehrenfried Murorua.
Ben Katamila is standing as an independent candidate and this action resulted in him being expelled from Swapo last week.
Steve Booys is standing for Swapo.
