Mukupi’s funeral on Saturday
By: JAN POOLMANSIBBINDA Constituency councillor Felix Kabuku Mukupi, who died in a car accident near Katima Mulilo in the Caprivi Region on Saturday evening, will be buried at Sibbinda on Saturday.
At the same time the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has to start with preparations for a by-election in the Sibbinda constituency, which should be held within 90 days.
Mukupi was driving from a Sibbinda Swapo Party district conference when the accident occurred.
It is suspected that Mukupi failed to stop at a T-junction on the road to Katima Mulilo from Linyanti and his car hit a tree which stood about 300 metres from the road.
He was thrown out of the vehicle and was found lying on the ground at the accident scene.
One of the passengers also died on the spot while two others sustained injuries and were taken to the Katima Mulilo hospital.
According to the deputy secretary general of Swapo, Nangolo Mbumba, the Sibbinda district has two options for replacing Mukupi as mobiliser in the district.
“They could either take the candidate coming second if there were more than one contender or the district should have another meeting to elect a mobiliser. But this can first wait for the funeral to take place,” said Mbumba.
The Chief Regional Officer of Caprivi, Regina Ndopo-Suwinda, told The Namibian that she has yet to inform the ECN of Mukupi's death so that arrangements could be made for a by-election in that constituency.
A memorial service will be held at the Ngweze Community Hall at Katima Mulilo on Friday, while the funeral will be the next day.
