Groundswell in Ngurare support base

By: JAN POOLMAN

EARLY indications are that the secretary of the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL), Elijah Ngurare, may retain his position at the SPYL congress in August.

Ngurare, who already was endorsed by the Kavango and Khomas region, also got the backing of the SPYL regional conference of the Erongo Region this past weekend.
It is believed that those against Ngurare continuing his term will push Julius Namoloh as an alternative to contest for the position of secretary for SPYL. Namoloh was nominated by SPYL’s Ohangwena Region.
During the past weekend high hopes were placed on Mandela Kapere to come out  victorious against the nomination of Ngurare for the SPYL leadership, but he could only attract seven votes, while another contender Natangwe Ithete, who was nominated by the Oshana Region for this position only obtained two votes. Ngurare walked over them with 24 votes to his credit.
However, Ngurare told The Namibian that he still has to decide whether he will be available for the position of secretary of SPYL. “I did not make up my mind yet, but nearer to the congress the public will be informed what my stance is,” Ngurare said.
The same three regions also nominated Veikko Nekundi to deputise Ngurare. Nekundi won the race with 31 votes against the two of Heather Sibungo at the Erongo regional conference.
Meanwhile, the Karas SPYL regional conference re-elected its secretary, Lydia de Bruyn, treasurer Benhard Shimanya and mobiliser Benedick Louw.
