Usakos municipality cheque fraud suspects granted bail
By: DENVER KISTINGTHE five men accused of having collaborated to steal four cheques belonging to the Municipality of Usakos were granted bail of between N$2 000 and N$3 000 on Wednesday.
Klaas Uanga, the municipality’s assistant accountant, and a former policeman, Ronald Gouws, were granted bail of N$3 000 each.
The other three accused, Vuzumzi Dladla, Joseph Ipumbu and Engelhard Sabab were ordered to pay bail in the amount of N$2000 in the Magistrate’s Court at Usakos.
Uanga was arrested last week, whilst the others were arrested earlier.
It was reported that the Police apprehended Gouws at Gibeon.
Gouws allegedly got the cheques from Dladla, who lives in Windhoek.
On his part, Dladla allegedly received the cheques from Ipumbu.
Ipumbu, a mine worker at Usakos, is said to have received the stolen cheques from Sabab, who is a metre reader at the municipality.
It is understood that Uanga was apprehended after Sabab claimed that he got access to the cheques with the help of the assistant accountant.
It was reported earlier that the Erongo Regional Police managed to recover the entire N$127 500 – the amount on one of the cheques.
Three of the four stolen cheques were also recovered whilst the last one, a blank cheque, was cancelled.
The men will have to make another appearance in this court on September 30.
