Don’t Burden The Teachers

IT IS true, the majority of Namibians are Christians. We observe Christian holidays with government blessing. But moral decay in our youth is not due to the abolition of Bible studies in public schools.

Christians still enjoy a lion’s share on TV and local radios. Christian church services are conducted in various churches every Sunday and students in secondary school hostels are allowed to attend.
We should not put the burden of upholding religious values on teachers. Let us start Bible studies in our communities and let us see if we can convince the youth to attend. We are even failing to convince the youth in our homes and communities to attend church services on Sundays and now we want it to be the responsibility of teachers to teach the youth religious studies.
The problem of moral decay in our society is brought about by development. Modernity comes with its share of problems. The youth are exposed to many evil things from TV, internet and magazines.
Money is no more a scarce commodity to them. They easily get money, courtesy of parents, elder siblings, cousins, family friends, etc and they buy alcohol and drugs. They see robberies, rape, sex, flirting, killings and many forms of crimes in movies and they go out and experiment. Charity begins at home, therefore good upbringing and parental guidance is the solution to moral decay in our country.
