A Stop-Gap Measure

WE, the School board of Nau-Aib Primary School in Okahandja, would like to respond on the SMS printed in The Namibian of January 15 2013.

In a parents’ meeting held on the 14 of January 2013, the parents made the following decisions with the School board.
Parents agreed to pay the N$100 for exercise books and photocopy paper. This was to enable the school to honour its contractual obligations to the company that provides the school with exercise books. It was also agreed upon by the parents and the school board that this practice of making use of companies to provide the school with exercise books will no longer continue as from January 1 2014, as stationery will be provided for by the Ministry of Education in 2014. This decision was made based on the press release made by the Permanent Secretary of Education that appeared in The Namibian of January 14 2013. It was further decided that all learners will receive stationery whether the parents had paid or not.
1) The request to those parents who already paid the SDF contributions to donate that money was never made by a teacher or a school board member, but by one of parents. The parents then decided that this decision depends on them as individuals.
2) Teachers were never mentioned to be part of the refunding of SDF money to parents. The school board informed the parents that they will be refunded and that the means of refund will be in the form of a cheque. The school board then requested the parents to be patient as they will announce a date in due course of the week when refunding will start.
3) The school board wants to make it clear that they respect and obey policies given through to schools by the ministry.
The parents and the school board further agreed that parents will only be refunded an amount of N$170-00 and that the N$30-00 will be used for bank charges and fees as well as for cheque books.
