Change BEE Mentality

I AM a Namibian studying abroad in Asia. I came across this very thought-provoking column with the headline ‘Death to BEE’ (The Namibian, 7 September 2012).

That piece really touched me. I didn’t know if there are other people who also thought that way. I was always marked as boring and called different names whenever I spoke to someone of my age about BEE [black economic empowerment].
But after reading this piece online it really put a smile on my face and opened my view of life even more. I always thought that this ‘BEE mentality’ is doing harm to the current and next generation.
Do these BEEs think of tomorrow or do they just live for the day? They should please leave the girls at universities and schools alone. In the same breath, young girls also please leave BEEs and start focusing on your schooling. And if you really want boyfriends then start dating guys your age and know that, as a student, it’s not a must to have Brazilian hair and all the fancy brands. Wait till you start earning your own money.
BEEs please start focusing on businesses (not only letting other people work and take the credit alone) and build healthy families.
Please BEEs don’t look at this criticism with a negative eye, because there’s always room for change!
