In 1987 we had to lock all Mweshipandeka male students out of hostel after they destroyed windows of the kitchen and assembly hall in exactly the same fashion as was recently reported.
The issue then was sparked by their refusal to stand in a queue when receiving their food, as that was ‘colonialism’ according to them.
The truth was that they stormed the food and girls did not get to eat if there was no queue system. They had to pay to fix the damage divided among them as a condition for them to be readmitted.
Thankfully, the incident saved our lives, as the many staff members who first went to eat the hake left by the male students who refused to eat that day, because we ended up being late at the bank as it was pay day and that was the day of the FNB bomb blast.
