A few students were asked: Who should be Namibia’s next President? The results shocked me, to say the least.
How did the phrase ‘born free’ come to light if the youth of today is obviously still entrapped in cultural and ethnical background when they select their future leader?
Out of the 12 students interviewed three choose a President who was not of the same ethnic group as theirs. This figure may be less as I only had their surnames to go by.
For the ones born in pre-independence Namibia we would have forgiven their selection process but, is it that bad that the 16 year-olds are also naturally inclined towards making a selection on grounds of ethnic background?
Needless to say most students chose their education minister but this is still of concern as we all know who is at the forefront to lead our nation.
We should look across the Atlantic and maybe learn a thing or two, schools should be producing intellectual minds, and therefore your next leader should win over your vote with intellectual debates; where the policy the next candidate plans on applying to the nation is scrutinised before a group of political science students, where our candidates go head-to-head on their policies.
That should be the real reason ‘born frees’ choose their president because he has spoken sense and stimulated your intellectual ego. Entangled Africa! My heart bleeds.
