Meanwhile, 40,000 subsistence farmers remain dependent on government food handouts! And 70 percent of foodstuffs are imported! Where else, indeed?
Where else could a minister who is so seriously under-performing get away with non-tender deals for imported tractors and implements that on top of all else are unsuitable for use on smallholder farms?
In France farmers have repeatedly taken to the streets to protest the French government’s lack of support to agriculture. Farmers have protested policies on unfavourable meat imports and EU subsidies by dumping manure in the streets of Paris, blocking government offices and fast food chains with rotten fruit and vegetables and by burning trucks of imported meat. They have also sprayed riot police officers with liquid manure, seized and slaughtered imported sheep and dumped the carcasses at government offices.
We wonder what French farmers would do about a minister of agriculture returning unspent millions in the hundreds to Treasury? A dash of liquid manure on the honourable, no doubt.
