While in exile, he taught at the UN Institute for Namibia in Lusaka, Zambia. This was an institution that provided training and research for Namibians under the leadership of Dr Hage Geingob as the director. During the early years of the University of Namibia, Africa served as the Director of Studies.
After having served for a while in Namibia, he returned to the country of his birth, South Africa, where he became the Vice Chancellor of Vista University, an institution which has since become part of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
Above all his good attributes, I remember Hugh as a reliable friend you could lean on and a good person who was gentle with all those who came his way yet firm in his convictions. I extend our sincere condolences and sympathies to his dear wife Louise, children and the rest of the family.
May the good lord our God grant his soul eternal peace!
