Why BIG Won’t Work

THE BIG discussion can go on for another decade or even longer. I am adamant and convinced Namibians do not need BIG support. Be honest – what can you still do with N$100 – nothing – not even pay school fees (which should be free!) – nor can you set up a business or buy food for a family.

What Namibians DO need however is: among other solutions to the poverty problem: Equal distribution of taxpayers money (even the poorest of the poor pay tax e.g. VAT). Namibians do not need luxurious state buildings - costly monuments and museums - only idolising certain persons. Nor is there any justification to bail out parastatals year after year. Put efficient, dedicated CEOs at the top. The latest crying baby clearly is NWR. Tobi Aupindi celebrated his ‘achievement’ only a few weeks ago. Now NWR threatens to retrench low-income staff (as if that would save the many millions) but the very lucrative salaries and fringe benefits are never touched.
In few years time Namibia has yet another President to retire with very costly payouts.
Can Namibia afford that? Corruption and money squandering have been on the agenda ad nauseam without anybody ever being made accountable or having to pay back the ‘lost’ money. No, usually, it’s a fully paid suspension until nobody asks questions anymore. Namibia must be one of very few countries with so many instant millionaires. All this insatiable looting goes on with impunity.
If the leaders would live up to promises made and commit themselves to the well-being of ALL and not only themselves, Namibians would not be in need of BIG support.
Namibia is not a poor country and donor countries give millions and millions for education and health. Where does all the money go?
