Omega 'Being Left Behind'

I AM a Namibian student residing in the western part of the Caprivi.

I am worried about a critical shortage of water and electricity

being experienced by the people residing in this poverty-stricken

township of Omega.

The residents of this township have not had water or electricity

for about four weeks.

Water is essential for human survival.

Nobody can live without it.

One never knows why these people are thrown into a society where

there is no development and these people are living in horrendous

conditions of abject poverty.

Once one goes around this township one can vividly see that

these are the most deserted people in Namibia.

Everything is dormant in this township and one can barely see

any crucial development projects taking place.

In addition to this, the people's standard of education is

abysmal.

One can hardly find a newspaper to read to keep oneself abreast

of current affairs taking place within the country and around the

world.

After having seen these people living in abysmal and pathetic

conditions, I tend to concur with my friend from Katima who once

told me that development is only slanted towards the

illustrious.

Before coming to this place I was often under the impression

that development is taking place throughout the country.

I am of the overwhelming opinion that regional councillors,

governors and mayors are charged with a responsibility of bringing

about development in their respective regions and towns have still

got a mammoth task to do in terms of uplifting the standards of the

poor.

I am of the opinion that a culture of corruption, laziness and

dependency is being developed, not only by the majority of the

senior officials employed by the Government but also by the ethnic

tribes in Namibia who are interfering with development.

I wonder what the world is coming to.

Discrimination should not be practised when it comes to

development of our entire country.
