ECSTASY … An elated Costa Seibeb wins the Zuri Metzgete in Zürich, Switzerland on Sunday.
NAMIBIAN cyclist Costa Seibeb won the Zuri Metzgete Cycling Race in Zurich, Switzerland on Sunday when he beat two Swiss cyclists in a sprint to the line. Seibeb completed the 158km race in a time of 3 hours 39 minutes 41 seconds, and beat Mirco Saggiorato and Dominik Fuchs of the Swiss EKZ Racing Team into second and third places respectively.
Seibeb is riding for the World Cycling Centre African team, which is currently on a tour of Europe, where they are competing in races in Switzerland and France. By winning the event, he made history, since it was the first European victory for a cyclist from the World Cycling Centre African team.
Seibeb was ecstatic about the win, saying he ‘could not believe it at first’.
“I am thrilled to win this race. Since the beginning of the year I have been practising my sprints and was just hoping that one day it would pay off. When I hit the front with about 80m to go, I just said, now it is my time and I just went flat out,” he said.
“It was very exciting, I was in tears and couldn’t believe that I had won the race,” he added.
Seibeb’s compatriot Till Drobisch also competed in the race for the World Cycling Centre team and finished 12th overall.
The Zuri Metzgete is one of the oldest cycling races in Switzerland, although in recent years it was downgraded from a Professional to an Elite level due to a lack of sponsorship. It is however still one of the top races in Switzerland and many of the top riders in the area competed in it.
Seibeb, who is one of six cyclists riding for the WCC Africa team, said he did not have to follow race instructions, which contributed to his success.
“Our coach told us all to think for ourselves and that we had the freedom to race our own race. It’s not often that you get that opportunity so I was determined to grab it,” he said.
The Zuri Metzgete was also a selection race for the Tour de L’Avenir, one of the top stage races in France for under 23 cyclists, which is often referred to as the ‘Little Tour de France,’ and Seibeb said he hoped to be selected for the tour.
“This was a selection race, so I hope to be selected for the Tour de L’Avenir. At this tour, some of the top teams in Europe will be on the lookout for young riders so I hope to make my mark and make them take notice of me,” he said.
Seibeb added that he was thoroughly enjoying his time in Europe.
“Europe has been amazing. It’s so green and beautiful here and it’s the place I really want to be at for my racing. Hopefully if I can make it onto the Tour de L’Avenir, some other professional teams will spot me and offer me a contract,” he said.
Seibeb’s mentor Pat Craven was thrilled with the result.
“I am just amazed at his performance. He keeps on improving physically, mentally and emotionally- he works so hard and makes use of the opportunities that come his way. He is still inexperienced, but he is so motivated and pushes himself all the time. I think he is on his way now,” she said.
