My Career

My Career
THE manager of the Financial Literacy Initiative at the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Francois Brand tells Chamwe Kaira about his job of educating Namibians on financial literacy.
The Namibian (TN): What does your job entail?

Francois Brand (FB): My exciting job is to educate Namibians on finances. As the manager of the Financial Literacy Initiative (FLI), I work with partners in many institutions to develop programmes to educate individuals as well as businesses in Namibia. I am responsible for the implementation of these different programmes as well as monitoring our impact.

The challenge is to make financial education interesting and exciting for Namibians and the small businesses in Namibia. Being financially literate can make a huge difference to people’s lives and really improve it in a practical manner.

TN: How long have you had this job?

FB: I have been the manager of the FLI since September 2012.

TN: Tell us briefly about your academic qualifications and where did you study?

FB: I did a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of South Africa (UNISA). However, a huge impact to my education came through experience. I have worked in different industries and had my own businesses. I have worked in many different capacities, from marketing to IT to HR.

TN: What is the financial literacy initiative all about?

FB: The Financial Literacy Initiative (FLI) is targeted to bring financial knowledge to all Namibians. The FLI was launched by the Minister of Finance, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, on 15 March 2012 and is based in the Ministry of Finance. The FLI is a national platform to enhance financial education for individuals and SMEs. More than 40 platform partners from the public, private, and civil society sector strive collectively through the FLI to address the needs in the area of financial literacy and consumer protection.

TN: What are the levels of financial literacy in Namibia?

FB: The FLI is currently busy with a National Financial Literacy Baseline Survey in order to determine what is the financial literacy rate in Namibia. We plan to release a report in September or October.

TN: What are the basic things about financial services that you would want Namibians to know?

FB: Financial services can be very beneficial to Namibians. The crucial factor to a successful relationship between the financial services and Namibians is that they understand each other. Therefore the financial service provider strives to understand and meet the needs of the client and the client makes an effort to understand the products and services available to them and make use of them appropriately.

TN: What kind of books and materials do you read?

FB: I read a variety of Namibian newspapers daily to keep me updated about different facets of Namibia. I also read online news on different countries and related to financial literacy programmes in other countries. I also read the Bible, it provides me with wisdom and motivates me.
