WHK Gymnasium wins Netball Super League

GRAND FINALE ... Unidentified players in action during a Bank Windhoek Schools Netball Super League match on Saturday.
THE Windhoek Gymnasium Private School won the first-ever Bank Windhoek Schools’ Netball Super League in Windhoek on Saturday. Windhoek Gymnasium won the A League title when they beat Tsumeb Gymnasium 42-27 in the final played at the Windhoek Gymnasium netball courts in Kleine Kuppe.
The B League was won by Walvis Bay Private High School who defeated the Windhoek Afrikaans Private School 28-26. The winner of the A League took home N$8 000 and the runner-up N$4 000 while the winner of the B League won N$6 000 and the runner-up N$3 500.The prize money will be used to buy netball equipment for the schools.

The netball league was launched in April this year and the first matches were played on 7 June. The league came to an end on Saturday with eight of the initial 10 schools qualifying to play for the top positions.

Executive Officer for Marketing and Corporate Communication at Bank Windhoek, Marlize Horn said at the prize-giving ceremony that the League Committee had done well in the promotion and organisation of the league.Horn added that apart from the time consumed, many players had to travel long distances to participate in games in other towns in order to qualify for the finals.

“Bank Windhoek looks forward to sitting down with the Namibia Schools’ Sports Union (NSSU) to look into the future of the sport at school level,” she added.

Steering Committee member, Liezel Garbers told players during the prize-giving ceremony that netball was the winner and not the teams, as the standard and level of the sport improved since the league started in June.

However, she added, that they plan an early start to the league next year as many of the games interfered with school examinations. -Nampa
