Pohamba summons MPs to amend Act
Shinovene Immanuel
PRESIDENT Hifikepunye Pohamba has summoned Members of the National Assembly and their counterparts in the National Council for a special session that will enable Parliament to amend the Electoral Act.

The special session of the National Assembly is set to be held from next Wednesday to 22 August this year.

Pohamba said in a statement that the meeting is set “to deal with matters of national interest”.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Theo-Ben Gurirab, yesterday told The Namibian that the special session is aimed at “urgently” amending the Electoral Act.

The MPs have been on recess since last month and were expected back in Parliament on 10 September this year. Their recess has however been cut short.

Namibia will hold National Assembly and presidential elections next year.

For the National Assembly to be opened for a special meeting, it needs to be opened by President Hifikepunye Pohamba.

“It’s urgent because we are under pressure of time. If we don’t do it now, it will affect our preparations for the elections,” Gurirab said.

Various ministers have booked trips to regions while others are on foreign missions.

Gurirab said: “Everybody has to stop what they are doing and come back. I hope we get enough members back”.

There were various workshops and consultations that were done on the Electoral Act.
