Police Games get handsome pledge in Karas Region
KEETMANSHOOP - The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Karas Region on Tuesday received financial pledges of N$355 000 and game meat from local businesses and politicians.

The money forms the regional contribution towards the hosting of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation (SARPCCO) Games, which will take place in Windhoek from 19 to 30 August this year.

Karas regional governor Bernardus Swartbooi, who also serves as Chairperson of the SARPCCO fundraising committee for Karas, was at the forefront of approaching business owners in the region to support the police.

Swartbooi himself contributed N$1 000, five sheep and two springboks. Other individuals and companies such as Coleman Transport, Puma Construction, JJ Supermarket, Nexus and SELCo to mention but a few, also came forth and put together N$355 000.

Speaking at the handover yesterday, the governor said the police and politicians have one task in common, which is serving the community, hence the donation is an assurance that police can count on politicians for support.

Swartbooi said this donation is also a gift to the police for their commitment to fighting crime, specifically drug-related crime, in Karas.

“To get this amount we have been selling kapana and fat cakes at night, so we have really worked hard,” the governor said jokingly.

He also used the opportunity to condemn crimes against women and children, and encouraged the police, magistrates, and community members in the country to work together and fight such crimes.

“The safety of women and children in this country is probably at its most unsafe point right now. It is not enough for us politicians to condemn the violence, but laws must be sharpened to deter offenders. It seems to me passion killing has become fashion killing,” Swartbooi stated. Receiving the donation, NamPol’s Karas Regional Commander, Commissioner Armas Shivute thanked all business owners and individuals for their support and gave assurance that his officers will continue to fight crime in the region.

“We are in full swing; nothing can stop us, neither the criminals nor their actions. We are in charge and gaining new ground every day as protection of our people cannot be overstated. To the police officers: do not compromise the safety of our communities by being courteous with criminals. The days of being nice to criminals are over,” the commander stressed.

This will be the first time the SARPCCO Games are held in Namibia. The eighth edition of the Games will be held under the theme ‘Combating Crime, United in Sport’.

The seventh edition of SARPCCO took place in Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2011. -Nampa
