THE Namibia Hockey Union’s Junior Development League was concluded last week when the prize- giving ceremony took place at the Doc Jubber Hockey Fields in Windhoek.
The development league has shown rapid growth over the past few years, with close to 700 children from seven schools in Windhoek participating in this year’s league - a number that has risen from originally 300 children in 2009.

The competing schools were St Paul’s College, Windhoek Gymnasium, St George’s, Windhoek Afrikaans Privaat Skool, Pioniers Park, Eros Primary School and Windhoek High School. Some players from the German private school DHPS also joined other schools, since they did not enter with their own team.
The league was held for boys and girls from Under 8 to Under 14 level, and took place at the Doc Jubber fields over the past two months.
St Paul’s won four of the titles on offer, while Windhoek Gymnasium won three, and WHS, St Georges and Pioniers Park one each.
A total of 256 matches were played while close to 950 goals were scored throughout the league.
Various individual awards were also presented at the ceremony.
Jeani Holz of St Paul’s won the Player of the Year award for U14 Girls, while Wiks Tromp of Windhoek Gymnasium won the Player of the Year award for U14 Boys.
The respective Under 12 winners were Kiana Cormack of St Paul’s and Mark Olles of St Paul’s; the Under 10 winners were Martha Mvula of St Paul’s and Eben Tadesse of St George’s, and the Under 8 winners were Wendy Lee Milne of St Paul’s and Ryan Moffett of St Paul’s.
There were also awards for the best forward and best defender in each category, as well as Player of the Match and Future Hockey Stars awards.
The overall top goal scorers in the league were Mia Burger of WAP who scored 33 goals, Ryan Moffett of St Paul’s who scored 29 goals and Connor Murphy of St Paul’s who scored 27 goals.
