Assaulter wants job back
Adam Hartman
A FORMER employee of The Stilz lodge in Swakopmund, who was fired after he assaulted his manager, will be assisted by the Namibia Food and Allied Workers’ Union (Nafau) in his attempt to get his job back.

The union claims that he was unfairly dismissed and the parties will meet on Friday to discuss the worker’s future at the lodge.

Lucky Shipanga (45) was convicted in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on a charge of assault after he beat his superior Margaret Moolman.

He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment which was conditionally wholly suspended for five years.

He assaulted Moolman at The Stiltz on 29 April because he had allegedly failed an alcohol breathalyser spot-test at work.

According to Moolman, tourists who had stayed at the lodge indicated that they had left N$20 for a service in their room before booking out.

Shipanga was sent to fetch the money, but he only returned with N$10, she explained. He apparently denied there was more money but he also seemed intoxicated, prompting Moolman to conduct an alcohol test which he failed.

He allegedly accused Moolman of not operating the device properly and denied that he was drunk on duty.

When Moolman insisted that she had tested him correctly, he allegedly lost his temper and punched her in the face knocking her onto the floor and then kicked her in the face and head repeatedly.

After members of the Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch responded to an alert, Shipanga was arrested. He appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded guilty on the charge.

Shipanga and Nafau are now pushing for his return to work at The Stilz.

Lister Tawana of Nafau declined to comment saying that “the matter is sub-judice until the meeting on 9 August”.

Shipanga had been working at The Stilz owned by Danie Halloway for about 18 years as well as on other several projects managed by Halloway including the Auas Safari Lodge and the new Desert Breeze lodge. He has been a barman, waiter, room attendant and handyman.

“I told him to leave and never come back again. Not only was he drunk on the job but he also attacked and nearly killed a woman who is his manager,” said Halloway questioning if the union supports violence against women without considering it as a very serious offence.

He is surprised that the union’s support comes in the face of the perpetrator admitting guilt and being sentenced.

Moolman said that she cannot see how she can ever work well with Shipanga again after what happened.

  • This is unbelievable! A man assaulted his manageress and they are supporting him to get his job back. Who wants to / can work with someone that assaulted you? How can you even support such case? He smelt of alcohol and got aggressive and now some people comment that "maybe he just had a bad day". Unbelievable that is all I can say! - lucy
  • Ja, denga odomu... You think you are the boss then you have all the power mos.. Respect your employees if you want them to respect you - Edward
  • The bastard deserve to go, let him go and serve his Union for 18 years of alcoholism, stealing and ill-discipline. - charge him
  • I am not supporting Shipanga to go back to work. He is one of the men in Namibia who are abusing women in this country. He does not respect the law . This is the Namibian independence country . He does not have the right to abuse and violent the human right law. Shipanga should go back to his home and learn to respect people ecpecial women. Point number one he was drunk during working hours and abuse his supervisor. What kind of a mess is that one. What kind of union is that one?, that is protecting the Shipanga the women abuser? You guys from the union go back and read the Namibian 's human right constitution and come back to tell us the content of it. In Namibia we are not going to tolerate and accept women abuser in our society. We are tired of sick men who are abusive us as women. You unionist what will happen if Shipanga will continue to become drunk at work or to abuse Moolman? We are tired tired of men who are abusive women in this country? - nuusiku
  • Theft is an offence of dishonest, even if N$10. He was just a better employee but when he steal more especial from client he deserve to be fired at all cost. If I was the employer I would call back the butcher back serve him with suspension and fire him right away, retain all monies due to him and while at the same time suing him for any loss incurred as well as medical fees. I believe the union will be forced to hire an attorney to defend for another 18 years. There are many ways of killing a cat - tuhafeni
  • @Ronnie - your own racist predjudice and hatred is exposed by your garbled comment. Shipanga was not fired 'because of 10 bucks' - he was fired 'after he assaulted his manager' ... ... "he allegedly lost his temper and punched her in the face knocking her onto the floor and then kicked her in the face and head repeatedly." ... In other words, he beat the crap out of the Woman - you choose to ignore this and instead play the Race Card in his defence. I'm guessing you don't have a problem with alcohol abuse either. Shipanga got off lightly. - zapata
  • this is intorelable in the society since it only us women vicitimased to the beating,it s a shame; anyway he was just suppose to be transfered to the other branch if NAFAU want to work in a good faith. - priscilla niinkoti
  • An absolute disgrace. How can the NAFAU defend the indefensible? There is no place for violence within our society, especially against women! I'm only sorry that his sentence was suspended. NAFAU; where is your integrity and credibility?? - David J Cartwright
  • Whether the guy worked for 18 years is irrelevant! Did you see that woman's face? My goodness! This is not even a matter of debate! He comes drunk to work, steals from a client and then beats up the manager. Any one of those 3 offences are reasonable grounds for dismissal. There's just nothing this guy can say to justify his actions. If he had a problem with the manager then he should've discussed it with her or with the owner in a civilized manner. That dude deserved to be fired and quite frankly deserves to be jailed! - Mervin
  • Oh, my goodness, some unbelievable comments! I wish these writers were the ones to be beaten up so badly by an employee - drunk on duty and seemingly dishonest as well. I bet not one of them would keep this guy in their employ. Grow up the lot of you one-sided, individuals - this type of behaviour at work or at home is unacceptable and he definitely deserved to get fired. He knew better, and he will never be trusted in his position again, so he has to go. My bet is that Holloway followed the law absolutely. No wonder Namibia is in such a mess - few people accept responsibility, few behave professionally and oh, how convenient it is to always blame others, and the past, for the poor service and performance that is prevalent in Namibia today.
