Namibia’s first Word Festival to take place in September

Koos Kombuis
Bank Windhoek has sponsored N$100 000 which goest towards Namibia’s first Word Festival (Woordefees), taking place from 2 to 7 September.
•Staff Reporter

The festival celebrates words, whether they are spoken, written or sung.

The official title is lKhi da !Hoa, which is Khoekhoegowab for ‘let us talk’ and will feature interviews with authors (most of them write in Afrikaans), all of them with Namibian roots. Namibian authors like Chris Bakkes, Piet van Rooyen and Noreen Arangies, as well as South African authors Riana Scheepers, Dana Snyman and Christine Barkhuizen. Members of the public will have the opportunity to chat with these authors, ask questions, and get their books signed.

The idea all started with a conversation between two friends, Ronelle Rademeyer, a journalist and Chrisna Beuke-Muir, a lecturer in Afrikaans at Unam. Their plan was to present a Book Week, but the initial idea turned into something much more.

The National Word Festival will feature 24 authors, 11 theatre presentations and six workshops, dealing with different aspects of creative writing (books for adults, how to write children’s books, radio dramas, film and television scripts) by Scheepers, Fanie Viljoen and Leon van Nierop.

Tossie van Tonder will present a workshop on the philosophy of dance, titled ‘The Rebellious Spirit’ and a range of theatre productions will be presented, like Aldo Behrens’ ‘Jakob Marengo’ featuring the well-known Kalahari-Ensemble. Koos Kombuis and Stef Bos’ ‘Niemandsland’, as well as collaborations with Wambüseun called, ‘Wambukombuis’. Stef Bos will perform with Jan-Willem Beuke, singing Afrikaans and Dutch songs at the Boiler Room next to the Warehouse Theatre. Another true Namibian production is the cabaret titled ‘Sjordé’, where song and poems tell of the sweet, sour and naughty in life. Frank Opperman’s ‘Rooi Kaart’ takes place at the Warehouse Theatre and ‘The Lesson’ from the famous dramatist Eugene Lonesco, will be presented by Sandy Rudd. Audiences can experience both the Afrikaans and Dutch languages in the production ‘Liefdesbriewe’ and ‘Damiaan’, a production about a Catholic priest who was declared a saint.

Fanie Dorfling’s Youth and Children’s choir will provide beautiful songs as well as traditional Afrikaans dances.

“Namibians have so much talent, and the lKhi da !Hoa Word Festival is an opportunity where this talent can be recognised. We are still in need of sponsors and I am therefore requesting Namibian institutions, businesses and individuals to make a contribution so that this festival can become a success,” said Chrisna.

For further information, please visit the Word Festival website at: www.namibiesewoordfees.weebly.com or contact Chrisna Beuke-Muir at 081 129 5607.

Tickets are available at Computicket. The Word Festival Programme for the scheduled events is also available at the different venues: Village Courtyard, Fresh ‘n Wild Restaurant, Boiler Room, Warehouse Theatre, NTN and Cota.
