LPO to celebrate 50th annivesary

AS part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the Livestock Producers Organisation (LPO) which is an affiliate of the Namibia Agricultural Union, will hold a conference at the Safari Hotel in Windhoek in early October.
The conference called LPO Agricultural Outlook, will run under the theme Cornerstone for Growth and is expected to be officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry John Mutorwa with the Minister of Trade and Industry, Calle Schlettwein giving a speech on industriliasing Namibian agriculture while Namibian-born United States of America-based scientist, Japie van Zyl, will talk about climate change on Mars.
This will be the first time Namibia hosts such a conference which will be attended by more than 300 stakeholders from the primary, secondary and tertiary agricultural sectors.
The general focus of the conference will be on agriculture in a globalised market with specific reference to how the Namibian agricultural sector should adapt.
Announcing the plans to hold the conference on Monday, LPO chairperson Mecki Schneider, said agriculture is the engine for economic growth and that growth in agriculture is the cornerstone of poverty reduction.
“Although agriculture’s contribution to the Namibian GDP seems relatively small compared to sectors like mining and tourism, it is an important sector in terms of creating employment opportunities,” Schneider said.
He further said agriculture’s strategic importance is recognised in the Fourth National Development Plan (NDP4) and the Namibian Industrial Policy.
“The event will also present unique networking opportunities with agriculture representatives and local economy sectors,” Schneider said.
