African Stars coach Ali Akan has resigned shortly after being asked to quit by the club’s chairman Sidney Martin. In a shocking development, Stars’ majority shareholder Martin asked Akan to resign following comments he made in the media, regarding Stars’ new signings and their interest in Black Africa striker Jerome Louis.
Akan was quoted in the Windhoek Observer as saying that Stars had signed Tigers goal keeper Athiel Mbaha, Ramblers striker Heinrich Kazerua and Black Africa winger Eslin Kamuhanga, while they had also made an offer for Louis.
“We are negotiating with Jerome Louis because we want to add more strikers to the club since the ones we had failed to deliver,” Akan was quoted as saying.
Stars’ chairman Martin took exception to Akan’s comments and asked him to resign. “Sidney called me and asked me to resign following my comments in the media. But this is football, this happens all over the world and I don’t know why it has to be a secret over here,” he said.
Akan’s resignation follows shortly after he signed a new contract last Wednesday to continue as the African Stars’ coach for the upcoming season.
“I signed a new contract last Wednesday to coach Stars for the new season, but if they don’t want me, I will not continue,” he said. Akan said he was disappointed to leave since he was looking forward to the new season.
“I was looking forward to the new season because we had unfinished business and have to win the league this year. We signed three quality players and offered Jerome a contract, so we have a strong squad for the new season,” he said.
Akan also mentioned that he was proud of his achievements with African Stars last season, after they won the NPL League Cup and the Bidvest NFA Cup, while they came second in the league. He added that ten of African Stars’ players were called up for national duty in various competitions throughout the season.
“I am proud of what we achieved. We played good football and I will miss my players. But life goes on and now I will just concentrate on my business,” he said.
Martin declined to comment on the matter.
