Free Your Mind (FYM), Namibia’s monthly comedy initiative recently celebrated their fifth anniversary. The brainchild of Ndemufayo ‘Chicken’ Kauxuxena and Onesmus ‘Slick’ Upindi, whose love for entertainment sparked the idea of forming a comedy collective.
Having seen FYM grow to theatre busting proportions, through much sacrifice and laughter, the FYM brand can now look forward to hitting our television screens, when it airs on NBC every Wednesday at 19h00, starting from 4 September.
A spokesperson for the National broadcasted, applauded the FreeYourMind’ers for their hard work and creativity at the Last Comic Standing event which took place on 1 August, saying that laughter is very important to human beings and has many health benefits, which is why NBC is excited at this promising partnership.
FYM MD Sabati Popyeni hailed the NBC for being open to new ideas and toasted the partnership as a new chapter in Namibian entertainment.
The most recent event, saw Namibia’s funniest up and comers competing for the title of Last Comic Standing. As has become the norm for FYM on the first Thursday of the month, it was a packed house, as Windhoek’s ‘it’ crowd clamoured to see last year’s winner, Taap the Guy, take to the stage, as host for the evening.
Once the eager crowd had settled in, the comics took to the stage to show off their best jokes in the highly successful knockout format that has made Last Comic Standing a highlight on the annual calender.
Contestant’s names were drawn from a basket, whereafter they had three minutes to impress the crowd and judges to secure a spot in the next round. All kinds of funny was brought out on the night, from first timers to more experienced performers, there was certainly no shortage of the top class comedy we’ve come to expect from the the folks at FYM.
Tuhafeni was first on stage and impressed with his fresh and fun comedy. He would eventually make it to the finals where he came up against a determined Chiro Musiyandaka, who went on to win the N$5 000 and the title of Last Comic Standing.
Musiyandaka has been a Free Your Mind comedian since 2011, when he burst onto the scene with a solid first performance, but then fell into a creative limbo during subsequent performances. He didn’t have to worry about that on the evening, because it was clear from the moment he got on stage that he meant business.
Fully aware of the time constraints of the competition, he got straight down to it, cramming some incredibly funny comedy into his allotted time. Even asking the audience to hold their applause during a standing ovation, so that he could finish his set. The Zimbabwean national steamed ahead to a well deserved victory, making him the third comic from that country to have won the Last Comic Standing competition since its inception.
When asked what inspired him to take up the microphone, he recalls always being the class clown at school and figured “why not get paid for it”. A media and music production student at the University of Namibia, he has a keen interest in drama and stage performance. He holds aspirations of following in the footsteps of local king of comedy Lazarus Jacobs, who has used his skills as a performer and business man to great affect, even becoming the patron of FYM and sponsor of the N$5 000 cash prize for the winner of Last Comic Standing.
When asked what he plans to do with the money, he replied that he plans on giving it to charity. “Which we all know begins at home!”
