Nabi steals the show against Namibia
Helge Schutz
Afghanistan had the upper hand of the first day’s play in their Interncontinental Cup match against Namibia at the Wanderers field yesterday, as they dismissed the home side for 190 runs in their first innings.

Stephan Baard top scored with 72 runs for Namibia, but Afghanistan spinner Mohammad Nabi stole the show as he took six wickets for 33 runs off 18 overs, on a pitch that showed early signs of crumbling. Namibia won the toss and elected to bat and got off to a solid start. Openers Pikky Ya France and Xander Pitchers looked comfortable against Afghanistan’s opening pace bowlers and after 10 overs had put on 36 without loss.

Pitchers was the first to go when he nicked a delivery by Shapoor Zadran to be caught behind for 22, with the total at 49.

The introduction of Afghanistan’s spin bowlers Nabi and Rahmat Shah however put the visitors in charge as they first slowed down the run rate while the wickets soon started to tumble.

Nabi dismissed Ya France (30) and Craig Williams (2) in quick succession and when Shah dismissed Sarel Burger LBW for a duck and Raymond van Schoor for 10, Namibia had crashed to 893 for five wickets.

Gerhard Erasmus joined Stephan Baard in the sixth wicket partnership of 56 runs before Erasmus was out for six off Nabi as Namibia reached tea at 142 runs for six wickets.

Namibia’s resistance quickly crumbled after tea as Nabi dismissed Baard for 72 runs, which included nine fours and one six, as well as Jason Davidson for four and MP Delport for one. Izatullah Dawlatzai dismissed Christi Viljoen for nine runs, while Nicolaas Scholtz was not out on 22. Nabi was Afghanistan’s best bowler but he received good support from Rahmat Shah, who took two wickets for 41 runs, while Dawlatzai and Shapoor Zadran each took one wicket.

Afghanistan were 62 for 1 at the close of play, with Nawroz Mangal on 51 not out.
