RICARDO Mannetti can turn the Brave Warriors into a formidable side if given more time, he said after their dramatic exit from the African Nations Championships qualifiers on Saturday.
The Brave Warriors staged a dramatic comeback to wipe out a 3-0 first leg deficit before losing a penalty shootout 4-5 against a ten-man Mozambique at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday.
“We didn’t progress but it has given us Namibians some faith in our local league. We all complain that the league is not good enough,” Mannetti said.
“Tonight (Saturday night) showed that we have excellent individual players. If you guys can just give me time ... ease on criticism. Give the team time to work, to be positive and to really rally behind this team, I think we can go places.
After a dour goalless first half, the match sprung into life in the second half when goals by Roger Katjiteo and Riaan Cloete reduced the deficit to 3-2.
Namibia attacked relentlessly and Katjiteo scored their third in the final minute to force a penalty shootout.
However Namibia’s hopes of progressing to next year’s main event were dashed when defender Chris Katjiukua’s spot kick was saved.
“I don’t want to blame any player. I’m not taking credit for anything,” he said. “I can’t say I’m disappointed. We showed that we can play until the final whistle. And that was enough for me. I’m just happy.
“I don’t care about the penalty shoot out. It’s a lottery. It doesn’t mean that they are the better team. It’s a little bit of luck.”
Mozambique were reduced to 10 men when striker Apsone David Manjare was sent off for a second yellow card with four minutes to go.
Namibia, who trailed 3-2 at the time, took advantage of their numerical advantage as Katjiteo equalised.
“The boys really showed to all the doubters and all the critics out there that they can play and they have steel and that they have big character. They were persistent. They stuck to the game plan,” said Mannetti.
