Papa Shikongeni presents ‘The Optimist’

Papa Ndasuunje Shikongeni
One of Namibia’s most gifted and long-serving visual artists and musicians has recently returned from a European tour alongside the talented Kapro and his Last Band Standing winning band, Etondo. There they presented Namibian music, arts and culture to excited crowds in Belgrade and across Serbia.
Hishishi Papa as he is otherwise known has put together an exciting new exhibition, his first solo in 10 years. This renowned artist has spent many years practicing and perfecting his talents, which will be on exhibition at the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) from 7 August to 6 September.

The exhibit will include card prints, mixed media collages, zip art and also the original print blocks. All this set to Papa’s masterful musical history, which adds a tangibly earthy and peaceful atmosphere to the exhibition.

Papa Ndasuunje Shikongeni was born 1971, his love for visual art garnered him an apprenticeship with the iconic Joe Madisia in 1993. He is a founder of the Tulipamwe International Artist Workshop and boasts many accolades throughout his career. Awards including an Honour Certificate at the International Sculpture Symposium which was held in China years ago. His works have seen him tour extensively, participating in numerous group exhibitions in South Africa, Botswana, the UK, Germany, China and Russia.

“‘The Optimist’ is about positive thoughts, positive sentiments towards others and above all unity,” said Papa Shikongeni when asked about what inspired this latest collection of works. He further lamented that lack of ambition and work ethic so prevalent in these times.

“I came to this world to work harder than the next man, to spread love and share my gift from almighty Jah with the world.”

‘The Optimist’ is not to be missed, this dynamic artist uses his art as a mechanism for change, flying the Namibian flag high across the world. The exhibition opens on Wednesday, 7 August, at the NAGN at 18h00.
