Malnutrition rises in Kunene
Hileni Nembwaya
THE current drought situation in the country is exacerbating malnutrition particularly in the Kunene Region.
This was confirmed by the Kamanjab Regional council chairperson, Dudu Murorua who said that although malnutrition is common in Namibia, the situation is being worsened by drought.
In July alone, six people mainly children under the age of five years were admitted at Opuwo District Hospital because of malnutrition while unconfirmed reports say that eight others had died.
According to the information obtained from the United Nations Children’s Education Fund (Unicef), HIV-AIDS prevalence is also high in the region after 50% of all pregnant women between 15 and 49 years received HIV counselling during antenatal care.
Despite HIV test results in the country being low, three percent of those tested in the region are yet to receive their results while health care awareness within the community is low.
Forty nine children out of every 1 000 live births in the region do not reach their fifth birthday with 35% of them aged below five receiving all basic vaccination against child killer diseases.
Despite of Unicef’s support of the government’s response plans through nutrition and hygiene practices, community identification and treatment of acute malnutrition to improve the quality of life within the communities, children’s nutritional needs remain wanting.
Unicef needs about US$7 400 to effectively roll out drought relief in the period June 2013 to May 2014.
