Francois Marais 20th at World Games archer
NAMIBIAN archer Francois Marais came 20th out of 24 of the world’s top archers in the Men’s Compound category at the World Games in Cali, Columbia on July 27.
Marais was paired against the 13th seeded Iranian archer Amir Kazempoor and after the first four rounds Marais was leading by one point.
Marais had shot 118 out of a possible 120 points, while Kazempoor had shot 117 out of 120 points.
In the final round of three arrows, Marais however shot an 8 to Kazempoor’s 10, with the result that the Iranian won the round 147-146.
Kazempoor also won his second round match before being eliminated in the quarterfinals. The president of the Namibian Archery Association Frank Bockmuhl said it was a good performance under the circumstances.
“The 146 points of Francois was amongst the highest scores shot during the event, and with another pairing he could well have gone further, and in my opinion this indicates that our archers can compete on the world stage,” he said.
Bockmuhl however said that Namibia’s lack of international exposure contributed to Marais’ inability to progress further.
“This was only Francois’ second event at this level in his life, and I think that shooting an 8 with his last arrow, after shooting two nines and 12 tens in a row can be ascribed to a lack of experience, while the pressure might have been too much.
We can only get past this, if we help our athletes to participate on world ranking events more regularly,” he said. The Men’s Compound division was eventually won by Reo Wilde of the United Stages who beat Pierre Julien Deloche of France 149-147 in the final.
