Poly Council reappointed

THE Polytechnic of Namibia’s Council will be reappointed for another three years, after its current term comes to an end next week.

Cabinet sources however said the reappointment did not come on a silver platter, as many in Cabinet were opposed to the reappointment.

Some thought the Council was not fit to carry out its duties.

Education Minister David Namwandi allegedly motivated that the Council stay intact to carry out the institution’s transformation into a university.

The Council was previously criticised for not effectively running the affairs of the institution.

President Hifikepunye Pohamba allegedly took issue with the fact that the Council was not exercising its powers and kept running to his office to report the institution’s problems as well as their concerns about how Polytechnic Rector Tjama Tjivikua operates.

It was reported that Cabinet did not hide its dissatisfaction with the way the Polytechnic of Namibia is run.

The Namibian was also informed that Prime Minister Hage Geingob was tasked to hold a meeting with the Council to forward Cabinet’s message that they have been put in place to deliver.

Lawyer Frans Kwala will allegedly be the only new face on the Council to replace Festus Mbandeka who resigned.

Cabinet sources also said that it was decided that Tjivikua will remain in his position to ensure that there is a smooth transformation from the Polytechnic of Namibia into the Namibian University of Science and Technology.

Cabinet’s decision comes after the Council decided earlier this year that it was not going to renew Tjivikua’s contract, which will end in September.
