Argentina win Mini World Cup
Helge Schutz
ARGENTINA, represented by St Paul’s College, were the overall winners of the Mini Hockey World Cup, which took place in Windhoek on Saturday for the 12th consecutive year . Argentina won six of the eight age group categories at the popular development hockey tournament.
Sponsored by Coca-Cola for the seventh consecutive year and organised by K5 Sports, the tournament saw a record turnout of more than 500 children, with a coastal team of 76 children also competing for the first time. The Doc Jubber Hockey Fields in Olympia were turned into an eclectic display of colours and cultures as the participating schools dressed up to represent various countries.
The participating countries were Argentina (St Paul’s), France (Windhoek Gymnasium), Kenya (WAP), New Zealand (St Georges), India (Pioniers Park), Japan (Eros and St Paul’s combined) and Russia (Coastal contingent). The day got off to a great start as the teams took to the stage to introduce their adopted countries and cultures. There were some hilarious scenes of Argentina’s ‘new pope’ dancing with their men’s soccer and women’s hockey teams and of the New Zealand team, in traditional Maori outfits, performing a rousing Haka. The French entered as bakers with French loaves on bicycles while their women did the can-can dance; the Kenyans entered in their traditional African outfits and the Japanese were ubiquitous in their red and white head bands and scarves.
“It was an awesome day with the introduction of new countries and new themes and the schools went all out to express the culture of their given countries. There were 530 participants from eleven schools and 46 junior officials, while the coast brought a full contingent of 76 children for the first time. They did very well and won the silver medal in the Boys U14 category,” Shayne Cormack of K5 said. Argentina were the overall winners, followed by France and Kenya.
The Ambassadorial Trophy, which went to the school that best displayed their country’s culture, was won by France, followed by Kenya and Argentina, while the Russell Bartlett Team Award, for the team depicting the best advertisement for hockey was won by Japan’s U12 Boys team of Eros Primary School.
The tournament saw some great hockey on display throughout the day, and culminated in some closely contested finals in the different age group categories.
The U8 Girls title was won by India who beat Kenya 2-0 in the final, while Argentina won the U8 Boys final. They drew 1-1 with France in the final but won the title after beating them 2-0 in their pool match.
Argentina beat France 1-0 in the U10 girls final, while Argentina beat France 4-0 in the U10 Boys final.
