Bra Hugh to rock Windhoek Jazz Fest

Hugh Masekela
There was an air of anticipation on a chilly Thursday, as an excited crowd converged for the launch of the Windhoek Jazz Festival 2013.
Once the impressive line-up of artists was announced, those in attendance could hardly contain their excitement and dread at having to wait until 26 October.

Namibian jazz stalwarts to rock the capital include Fujazz, Erna Chimu, Big Ben and Elemotho, to mention a few

The City of Windhoek and their sponsors then caused a near riot when they presented the international artists to perform on the day. Afro Pop sensation and the winner of eight SouthAfrican Music Awards, Zahara will be back in town, alongside Jazz legend, South African maestro Hugh Masekela.

Boasting new management and fresh branding, this year’s Jazz Fest promises to be an even bigger spectacle than the impeccable showings of previous years. Preparations are well underway with the City of Windhoek expecting an influx of visitors from neighbouring countries as has become a trend in recent years.

“Jazz music has become so popular that the Windhoek Jazz Festival attracts not only Windhoekers, but also people from all over Namibia and beyond,” Deputy Major Muese Kazapua said while delivering the keynote address on behalf of Mayor Agnes Kafula.

An endeavour of this scale would not be possible with out serious technical and financial backing. Thankfully sponsors came to the party and are pushing their considerable expertise and resources to the limit in order to guarantee another top notch event. City of Windhoek CEO, Niilo Taapopi expressed great thanks to the sponsors Old Mutual, Windhoek Lager, Ad Force, Air Namibia, 99FM, National Arts Council of Namibia, Jameson and DB Audio for their efforts and their great work in putting the event together.

This year’s Windhoek Jazz Festival is set to to kick off at 16h00 on Saturday 16 October at the Hage Geingob Stadium. The day’s lineup also consists of the best local talent including MOJ’s, Sharon van Rooi, Ama Khoe and Mahetage.

To coincide with the highly anticipated Adventure World Travel Summit, the Windhoek Jazz Festival will serve as an exciting welcoming event to visitors from all over the world. Its for this reason that the organisers urge Jazz lovers to buy their tickets early to avoid disappointment. Tickets cost N$200 in advance and N$250 at the gate.

They are available at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers outlets nationwide. Mayor Kafula in her address lauded the organisers and the committed Jazz fans out there, who have made this event the annual highlight it has become.

“This event will significantly contribute to elevating Windhoek’s status as a cultural and artistically vibrant city,” she said.
