Fraud charge balloons
Werner Menges
THE amount of money involved in a fraud case against a former employee of a Windhoek-based drilling contractor has ballooned to N$17 million, it was revealed in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

A year after the arrest of Stephanie Serfontein (44) and her ex-husband, Izak Serfontein (42), on a fraud charge, the legal trouble in which the former couple find themselves has deepened with their latest appearance in court.

The amount of money involved in the fraud charge faced by the former couple has increased from an initial figure of N$3 million to N$17 million, Public Prosecutor Eric Naikaku informed Magistrate Hileni Kavara when Mr and Mrs Serfontein appeared before her in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

It is alleged that Mrs Serfontein defrauded her former employer, mining drilling contractor Ferrodrill Namibia, while she was employed with the company as an accountant.

The fraud was allegedly committed from 2008 to 2012. It is alleged that Mrs Serfontein siphoned money from the company’s account, and channelled funds into the account of her then husband, an account of a child of hers, and into her own account.

According to the court record of their case, Mrs Serfontein was arrested on 23 July last year. Her ex-husband was arrested the next day.

She spent two and a half weeks in custody before she was released on bail in an amount of N$75 000, while Mr Serfontein was granted bail of N$75 000 after three weeks in custody.

Naikaku also informed the magistrate that investigations in the case have been completed.

Given the increase in the amount of money involved in the matter, the prosecution needs more time to formulate the charges on which the two accused will be required to plead in the Magistrate’s Court, Naikaku said.

Defence lawyer Sarel Maritz, who is representing the accused, confirmed that his clients were informed yesterday about the change in the amount of money allegedly involved in the case.

His clients will be ready to give their plea on the charges against them with their next scheduled court appearance on 9 August, Maritz said.

They remain free on bail.
