THE Private Sector Road Safety Forum (PSRSF) is participating in the Ethimbo Road Show, an initiative of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), over the next month.
The activities took place in Windhoek over the last week, with more to come in Rundu during the week of 29 July and in Ongwediva from 12 August.
The PSRSF is a voluntary organisation consisting of businesses and other stakeholders who share the same interests in promoting road safety.
According to Horst Heimstadt of the PSRSF, the main objective of the forum is to facilitate a sustainable reduction in road traffic accidents and casualties through public-private partnerships between business, civil society and the government. The organisation was established in March 2013 following a call by the Minister of Works and Transport, Erkki Nghimtina, urging the private sector to become part of an integrated approach towards road safety.
The activities in each town start on Monday and end with law enforcement activities on Friday or Saturday. A total of nine stakeholders, namely Namibian Police, City Police, the Roads Authority, MVA Fund, Blue Cross Namibia, PSRSF supported by FNB, VIVO Energy and SAIF, and various government ministries are participating at the Road Show in support of the NNRSC.
In Windhoek, a march was held last Monday from the City of Windhoek Community Centre in Katutura to the UN Plaza. The march was attended by about 30 pedestrians, 15 cyclists and 10 emergency vehicles.
The PSRSF also distributed more information at their stand at the UN Plaza during the week, where visitors could sign a petition to support the PSRSF’s initiative.
“In Windhoek, everybody was encouraged to support this initiative by signing a petition, which was run in conjunction with The Namibian Cycling Safety Campaign. The petition has now reached over 1 000 signatures,” Heimstadt said.
“The NRSC, PSRSF and other stakeholders aim to educate the public on road safety issues and the consequences of disobeying the rules of the road. For the PSRSF as implementers of road safety programs we call on the public to visit our stand and provide us with ideas of how this evil could be addressed,” he said.
