I HAVE followed the story of the Polytechnic Rector Tjama Tjivikua, with sadness. The reason for wanting to get rid of the man, if what we read in the newspapers is true, is a sick joke.
Firstly the question that begs an answer is “Does the rector approve his own remuneration package?” and secondly, “Who awarded him the performance score of over 80%?”.
If one must answer these questions truthfully one can easily conclude that the Polytechnic Council must tell the nation their true intentions.
Accordingly a performance score of over 80% is clear confirmation of the man’s excellent performance and surely the results are crystal clear for even the blind to see. In the absence of other reasons, the Polytechnic Council appears to have been acting on instructions from some authority, and if I have to speculate, the Minister of Education.
Minister David Namwandi, must pronounce himself on this matter. In my honest opinion, even the planned forensic audit is just a guise being used to find fault with the man’s work to justify getting rid of him.
Tjivikua has instilled discipline at the Polytechnic and instead of trying to sideline him, let us support him. We have seen the institution grow from strength to strength. In the Polytechnic at least we have a credible institution that has produced quality graduates.
I am stating this fact from my experience as an human resources executive who manages sourcing for talent.
You cannot score the man over 80% on his performance and at the same time use lame excuses to try so desperately to get rid of him. The Polytechnic management has managed the institution’s finances prudently. This cannot be said about some other institutions or SOEs.
The next Polytechnic Council must be constituted of men and women of good academic standing who will not be used as pawns by political forces with hidden agendas.
I salute those who intervened in this matter. That is great leadership.
