Pretorius wins Ugab Challenge
Helge Schutz
JUNIOR riders dominated the Ugab Terrace Mountain Bike Challenge which took place outside Outjo over the weekend, by clinching the top three places in the Open Men’s category over 60km.
Seventeen year-old Michael Pretorius of Team Kia won the 60km marathon when he beat Tristan de Lange of Mannie’s Bike Mecca, who recently turned 16, in a sprint to the line.
Both riders completed the marathon in a time of two hours 15 minutes 42 seconds, while another junior cyclist Herbert Peters came third, more than seven minutes behind, in 2:22:55.
About 150 riders competed in the Ugab Terrace MTB Challenge over 60km, 30km and 15km. The 60km route was made up of two 30km laps, and consisted mostly of single lane jeep tracks.
Pretorius, De Lange and Peters made an early breakaway from the chasing pack and by the end of the first lap they had already built up a lead of more than 10 minutes.
Pretorius and De Lange stepped up the pace in the second round and stretched their lead to eventually finish more then seven minutes ahead of Peters. It was Pretorius’ first marathon victory of the year but he acknowledged that he had to work hard for it as De Lange pushed him all the way.
“My legs were finished and I had nothing left to give in the final sprint, but it was a great race which I thoroughly enjoyed,” he said.
It was the first time this year that Pretorius had beaten De Lange in a marathon event, after De Lange had earlier won the Junior Men’s category of the KIA Mountain Bike Marathon series, followed by Martin Freyer and Pretorius.
Pretorius however has been more successful in the shorter Mountain Bike Cross Country series and is currently leading the Junior Men’s category in the series having won three of the five races to date. With only one race left in the series he is assured of winning the Junior Men’s title.
Several Namibian top riders however did not compete in the event.
Heinrich Kohne, who recently won the National Mountain Bike Championships was competing at an event in Botswana, while Costa Seibeb, the winner of the KIA MTB Marathon series was also competing abroad. Martin Freyer, who won the Junior Men’s category at the National Championships, was unavailable due to family commitments.
Vera Adrian of Mannie’s Bike Mecca was a comfortable winner in the Open Women’s category, completing the 60km event in two hours 31 minutes 30 seconds. Irene Steyn of Team Build It finished second more than seven minutes behind in 2:39:03, while Heletje van Staden came third in 2:43:09.
Fanna Lambert won the Veteran Men’s category over 60km in 2:31:29, followed by Hans du Toit (2:34:02) and Leander Borg (2:37:13), while Stefan Bohlke won the Masters Men’s category over 60km in 2:23:39, followed by Johan Fourie (2:31:26) and Karl Grunschloss (2:36:03).
Michelle Fourie won the Veteran Women’s category over 60km in 3:24:59 followed by Rina Lambert in 3:28:23. The marathon provided ideal competition for Namibia’s top riders who will be competing at the Mountain Bike World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa in August.
Namibia will be represented by Heinrich Kohne and Heiko Redecker in the Open Men’s category, Martin Freyer and Michael Pretorius in the Junior Men’s category, and Vera Adrian and Heletje van Staden in the Open Women’s category.
