The NSI at National Science Week
Staff Reporter

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ... A member of the Namibian Standards Institution team demonstrates the inspection of pre-packaged products to ensure the weight displayed on the package corresponds with the product’s actual weight.
The Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) participated in the 2013 National Science, Technology and Innovation Week (National Science Week), held at the University of Namibia’s Windhoek Campus in the Main Hall last week.
The aim of taking part was to inspire learners and students to develop an interest in science and provide them with information on possible career opportunities.

The NSI is statutory body responsible for standards development and coordination and carries out, among other things, regulatory functions such as the implementation of the Metrology Act, testing and inspection of fish and fisheries products and inspection of canned meat in order for Namibia to meet the requirements of its trading partners.

The team carried out various demonstration including how the verification of liquid fuel dispensers (commonly known as fuel pumps) are carried out to make sure that a pump pours out the correct amount of fuel. Furthermore, the Metrology team demonstrated how to measure the accuracy of temperature instruments such as, thermometers, using a process known as temperature calibration. The team also carried out daily demonstration of the process involved in the inspection of pre-packaged products to make sure that the weight displayed on a package corresponds with product’s the actual weight.

A member of the team from the Inspectorate Division demonstrated how a seam inspection for canned meat products is carried out to make sure that canned meat conforms to food safety standards. Last but not least, a demonstration of the work done by our Food Laboratory in Walvis Bay was showcased in areas of microbiology and chemistry testing. National Science Week is a project by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the University of Namibia and the Polytechnic of Namibia. It has been held yearly since 2004, and is aimed at promoting public awareness and appreciation of science and technology in a fun and entertaining way.
