Discarded plastic poses a danger to livestock

THE Chairperson of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Economics, Natural Resources and Public Administration has expressed concern about the danger which discarded plastic items pose to cattle.
Ben Amathila expressed his worry whilst speaking at the Oshawapala Centre in the Ohangwena Region’s Endola Constituency during his committee’s four-day visit to that region to consult communities and authorities on the drought situation on Thursday.
Amathila indicated that, as elsewhere in the country, the Oshawapala Centre is also faced with a problem of discarded plastic, mostly plastic bags, which is scattered all over the area and poses a danger to cattle looking for grazing.
“The plastic is dangerous and kills an animal once it has swallowed it, especially during this time of poor grazing due to the drought situation the country is facing this year,” he told the community of Oshawapala and the surrounding areas.
He urged members of the community to clean up the areas they live in.
“You must do something now in order to prevent your livestock from dying,” he advised them.
Some members of the community shared Amathila’s concern and promised to embark upon cleaning campaigns to ensure that discarded plastic bags are removed from their localities and destroyed.
An elderly woman from the Oshawapala area recalled during the meeting with members of Amathila’s committee how one of her cattle died recently, saying cloth from an overall and a piece of shoe was found inside the animal’s carcass.
The NA Standing Committee on Economics, Natural Resources and Public Administration commenced its visit to the Ohangwena Region on Tuesday and concluded its activities there on Thursday. – Nampa
