Accident claims three near Swakop
Adam Hartman
THREE people were killed while three others were injured on Friday when the vehicle they were travelling in left the road and overturned about 10 kilometres outside Swakopmund going toward Henties Bay.
The deceased were identified as Nico van Staden (46), Hildergaard van Staden (25) and her sister, Ester van Staden (16), according to the Acting Regional Crime Investigation Coordinator, Inspector Erastus Iikuyu.
The three survivors were children, two boys (seven months and five years) and a girl (2). The two boys were treated at the Swakopmund Cottage Medi-clinic but the girl’s injuries were serious and she had to be flown to Windhoek for further treatment. All three children are said to have lost their mother (Hildegaard), while the baby’s father (Nico) was also killed. The two older children’s father apparently lives in Windhoek.
Reports from the West Coast Safety Initiative suggests that five of the occupants were flung from the vehicle when it overturned resulting in two being killed instantly while the third died soon after arriving at hospital due to the severity of the injuries sustained.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
