Sex workers want more organisations
Clemans Miyanicwe
THE co-ordinator of Namibia Sex Workers Alliance (Naswa) Jeremein Morkel called for the establishment of more organisations to represent their interests.
Naswa is part of the African Sex Workers Alliance (Aswa) based in South Africa.
Morkel took over from previous coordinator Abel Shinana who died last year in a car accident. Before his appointment Morkel worked for Rights Not Rescue (RNR), the largest sex workers’ organisation in the country.
Namibia has between 3 000 and 4 000 sex workers, according to Morkel.
At the moment Namibia has two sex workers organisations, Rights Not Rescue and Voice of Hope.
Morkel thanked the Namibian government for the survey which the Ministry of Health is conducting on men who have sex with men as well as sex workers but appealed for the abolishment of apartheid laws which prevent them from carrying out their work like any other professionals.
“Decriminalising sex work will not only benefit those in the trade but governments’ fight against HIV will be made easier,” Morkel said. “Police and health care workers are harassing us. This can lead to increase in HIV infections.”
He said police confiscate condoms from sex-workers while healthcare workers ridicule them when they go for treatment.
“How do you expect us to fight HIV if condoms are confiscated and sex workers are scared to go to hospitals due to the bad attitude of nurses and doctors?” he said.
Naswa plans to organise a workshop with police, healthcare workers and media to sensitise them on issues affecting their group.
