GOVERNMENT through the Ministry of Regional, Local Government, Housing and Rural Development (MRLGHRD) has plans to build more than 10,000 houses in informal settlements within the next 16 months.
Regional, Local Government, Housing and Rural Development minister Charles Namholoh revealed this plan during the launch of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN) Department of Diakonia and Social Services (DDSS) five years strategic plan at Oniipa in Oshikoto Region last week on Friday.
“Everyone should be provided with shelter and if you give someone shelter, they can have collateral,” said Namholoh adding that the programme is envisaged to provide housing to satisfy various market demands.
He also urged church and traditional leaders as well as the government to move together in the fight against poverty.
Namholoh encouraged leaders to unite all Namibians and to maintain cultural practices that will help reduce the high crime rate in the country.
Speaking at the same event, ELCIN Presiding Bishop Shekutamba Nambala said his church plays a key role in addressing social problems in the Namibian society and as a result, the DDSS’ vision leans towards the Millennium Development Challenge goals.
“DDSS aims to empower the youth and the elderly and as a church, we want to work together with other stakeholders and other churches to set a momentum for moving forward,” Nambala said.
He said the DDSS will work in collaboration with key stakeholders to provide psychological support to affected communities in flood and drought affected regions and to raise awareness on gender-based violence within communities.
ELCIN will need about N$ 4 350,000 to implement and facilitate a community development advocacy programme.
The Oniipa constituency councillor, John Shiindi, proposed an urgent need for an old age home to be build in the region.
“The old aged needs a home where they can be provided with all the necessary services like sanitation and food,” said Shiindi.
Over 700,000 Namibians are believed to be members of ELCIN.
