They’ve Got Jokes... And Jewellery

If you and your best friend are both stand-up comediennes in the bawdy business of shocking all and sundry with politically incorrect puns and the reality of your lack of underwear, it goes without saying that the most logical thing to do with your spare time is to make jewellery just as quirky and custom crazed as you are.
Enter Zell and Weezil, Free Your Mind’s funny femmes, whose ambling about in “earlaces,” and bucket earrings, much to the envious oohs and aahs of fashionistas, led to the establishment of new accessory kid on the block Funky. Fresh. Glam.
Kicking off at City Flea Market in December 2012, the two jokers by day and jewellers by night have spent the last few months creating one of a kind accessories for every girl who’s ever imagined tripping a wench for wearing the exact same Mr. Price fare dangling from her own incensed ears.
Originally, the brain child of Zell, who describes the pairing as fiercely pro-Namibia, pro-women and bent on world domination, Funky. Fresh. Glam, much like their comedic careers, is aimed towards pushing the limits of art and presentation through a fortuitous compatibility of personality. And hyperactivity.
“I’m a slave driver and Weezil is an insomniac so she works away at the jewellery like she’s in a sweatshop making one of a kind pieces that go beyond basic beads but rather play around with textures, feathers and metals to make items that are an extension of our personalities,” says Zell of Weezil.
And Weezil of Zell: “Zell’s design input makes sure we are generally on trend in terms of colour and what people are feeling but we always get quirky pieces like buckets, hangers, forks and knives and things people don’t necessarily use as jewellery and incorporate them into our items for a bit of affordable funk and freshness.”
Also quite green in their goings on, when an item fails to sell twice at market they simply recycle its elements by disassembling it and making it into something sure to draw in the damsels. This makes sure that stock doesn’t endlessly pile up while also adding an element of market research in that they know which of their dangles are the duds.
As the world isn’t perfect and not everyone wants to run around with forks dangling from their jug handles, Funky. Fresh.
Glam offers custom jewellery making, should one have the foresight to order their wares at least a week in advance.
A wide awake Weezil will then mock up three items based on your colours, items and mood and, just like that, the threat of walking into the bathroom to find everyone wearing the same N$80 chandelier earrings and faux silver collars is expertly averted.
Still very much in its growing stages, Funky. Fresh. Glam recently reached sponsor status by providing all the gorgeous jewellery worn at Free Your Mind’s all female show ‘Cherrie on Top’.
“We were really proud to sponsor all the jewellery for this all female event and with spring on its way we’re looking forward to growing even more and expanding our line,” says Zell.
Items to look forward to are bags, maxi dresses, throw cushions, beanies and placemats all bang on trend but without losing the “integrity of originality” says Weezil. In an Irish accent.
